Target Mural

This mural, proclaiming We Stand Together We Build Together, created an opportunity for Lake St. Target to reconnect to the Minneapolis in the midst of civil unrest and communal grieving, in the heart of the area where demonstrations took place following George Floyd being killed, the mural features the work of 5 black artists local to MPLS. Both panels housing “We” were illustrated by Avahnii Lewis.

Panel 1: Journey speaks to passing from one place to another. This piece highlights those of us working towards racial equity and the forces that are with us on this journey. The figures symbolize protestors that could be any one of us. In there hair are the faces of ancestors and those we have lost in the battle to end systemic racism. Messages of the movement are also intertwined within these flowing illustrations, embodying the unified Journey of Black people in America. If you look closely, the textured text pieces, written by the artist, simulate recent news headlines.

Panel 2: Envision Change represents the many people involved in this movement. The disparate pieces – the faces, newsprint, textured illustrations, etc. – collaged together to form a whole are meant to represent individual stories related to a larger, central one. Behind the faces are illustrated flowers and plants. These symbolize growth, beauty, and the memorialization of Black people who were taken too soon. If you look closely, the textured text pieces, written by the artist, simulate recent news headlines.
